A while back I asked for opinions on wood floors for bathrooms. Well, the response was great and now I want to know what you think about wood floors in the kitchen! I have only had tile (I have yet to have any input into a kitchen that I live in) but I think I would like wood. Are there downsides though? Dents, dings, spills? Let me know what you think!Image Veranda

Yes, I think I would like wood floors indeed but I am all ears!

This is one of my big wants for my future kitchen. Our floor space is much like that 2nd photo, at only abt 70 sq feet and two entry areas. I would love for our wood floors to continue on instead of having it stop for a drop of tile. Plus it would got great with the farm sink that will be in my future kitchen as well :-)
i love my wood floors in the kitchen...in fact, i wouldn't have anything BUT! yeah, there are dings, but that's the cool part to me...i've had NO problems with spills, i think you might have issues with the really rugged heart pine or something like that...but ours are the same throughout the house, and it works great. in fact, i would love to bring them into the hall bath some day, too...what feedback did you get from that idea??
I have wood floors in my 10 year old kitchen! I have three little ones, two cats and a Greyhound, and I wouldn't change my wood floor for ANYTHING! We have real wood floors, so they can be stripped three times, which is nice to know! The wood is softer than tile and so easy to keep! Oh, your pictures are fab! I'll take those kitchens please! :)
we have an open floor plan so we opted for hardwood throughout including the kitchen. So far so good, but a friend of mine did have a dishwasher leak and they had to tear them all up. I simply just pray against that:)
I also have wood floors in my kitchen but they are painted plaid. I love them and don't mind the dings at all. the great thing is when I get tired of the plaid I may paint them bright blue...or just stain them again...
Second kitchen is my favorite..
With the right wood floors, I think the dings just add to it... We have the "modern" wood floors and while I love them, they certainly have gotten a little worn. Just can't pull off worn in new construction like you can in renovated homes! (I think at least).
I love wooden floors in the kitchen and my in-laws have them. I am so very jealous. My mother-in-law says that the downside is that they like other wooden floors should be waxed with heavy duty wax once or twice a year with the buffer machine too. Also, she said that she is always nervous when she is boiling water or cooking with really hot liquid because she has gotten a few white spots on the floor from hot water sizzling out of a pan (the waxing floors helps with this endeavor to lesson along with a little re-staining). The only other issue that she has had is when she had to potty-train/house-break any new dog. She loves them and has built multiple homes with them. They are beautiful. Good luck!
I've only ever lived in places where wood floors were in the kitchen. I love the open look kitchens, like open right into a family room and I like the floors to be the same throughout- so wood floors are the only way to go for me Oh, and I like them like my chocolate- the darker the better haha :)
I really want wood flooring in my kitchen (see today's post - new flooring is sadly needed). I have worried about spills and my dog scratching it, but in the end, I think I would have to go with wood. So classic.
I love the seamless look of wood floors when it continues from room to room. There is nothing worse than when one flooring material is broken up by another. It just doesn't look right (or flow right...).
My 2 cents...

One more thought...I have seen hardwood that is laid in the master bedroom and continued into the bathroom. The owners decided to add a "break" or threshold from the bedroom to bathroom incase of future water damage. Having this "break" will allow the owners to replace the damaged flooring in the one room only. Make sense?

Definitely a fan!
I've never had them myself, but from what I know, I'm a definite fan of all hardwood floors. Classic elegance!
My parents have hardwood floors in their kitchen and I love them! And, they haven't had any problems with water either. I think its a great classic look that can fit into all different types of kitchen designs.
We have wood floors in our kitchen and love it! Lovely images you selected too.

My whole first floor is hardwood floors. I love them! If we ever build again, I'd have hardwood all over again!
i'm undecided how i feel
I've never had wood floors in the kitchen, but I really love the look! Especially when the kitchen is all-white or chrome--then the wood really warms it up! I don't know how the clean-up is though :-(
Hi, Marianne, I went from tile in my old house to wood in this house & I have to say, I love it. Much easier to stand on and cook, easier on the back and things don't break as easily when dropped. Love my wood floors & they are easy to clean with a damp mop.
Love my hardwood floors in the kitchen!
wood floors, definitely. I wouldn't have anything else. I also have wood floors in my master bath, and I adore them.
Loving the floor in the second image!
Wood floors do wonders for kitchens with so many slick, shiny surfaces: appliances, countertops, backsplash etc. They can warm up the space. I prefer a width of 5 inches or more and always do a custom mix stain for clients. You can't go wrong with 1 part Dark Walnut 1 part English Walnut--has so much more depth and warmth to it than just using one color out of the can.
I've had it in both homes we've owned, and loved it. It is easier on the legs/feet than tile, and the dings/dents and spills only add character. It's definitely a DO in my book!
If you have young ones you may want to go with a lighter wood color. I had Brazilian cherry in my first remodeled kitchen- absolutely loved it, but wow it showed every single crumb and dent.
These photos are SO gorgeous. I love the character, warmth and texture wood flooring adds in any part of the house... and the kitchen is no exception! These photos are wonderful examples of how beautiful wood flooring looks in kitchens.
Wood, wood, wood, wood! No reason to change materials in one particular space. I am having them in my new kitchen and don't think I've ever designed a kitchen without!
That second kitchen is making me crazy--so lovely! I love wood floors in absolutely any room:)
I love having wood floors in our kitchen although it was not our choice. If I could pick any type of wood flooring it would absolutely be the beautiful look of antique longleaf heart pine. It is only available as reclaimed timber from old salvaged buildings and the results are amazing!
I love wood floors in a kitchen! I wouldn't have anything but wood floors! I think it is a richer classier look, especially when it is continued through the home!
I really like the 2nd pic for the following reason... you mentioned dents dings and spills, well I feel like in the 2nd, those things would only add to the flooring. Does that make sense, like it supposed to look lived in/on so wear and tear (in moderation of course) wouldn't be a detriment? Call me crazy. You know i love them all anyway.
Thank you all so so so much for your input! It looks like I need new floors for my kitchen! Now, I just have to find the funds.....
those lucite chairs are wild!
I'm sure you already know from Brooke that we are in the flooring business, so I thought I'd add my "two cents" worth pertaining to wood floors. First of all I love them. I don't have them in the kitchen, though, but many people do choose them for that application. If you use a pre-finished wood floor the warranty is void if you use water to mop them. Wood and (very much) water simply don't mix and it doesn't take a lot of water to do damage. But, with that said, I tell my customers who want wood in their kitchens "that is what you have insurance for." If your dishwasher or icemaker leaks, you will have the inconvenience of replacing wood flooring because it will warp and buckle. Anyway, just a few tidbits on wood...some things to consider. I wouldn't let it "scare" me out of using wood in a kitchen because you see it every day....you just need to be aware of the pros and cons and make a decision based on correct information. Hope this helps!

I Love the House Beautiful Image with the dark hard wood floors! They are so great and I would love to somehow incorporate them into my kitchen!
I also have wood floors in my kitchen but they are painted plaid.
