A New Piece of Art

For our anniversary gift to each other we knew we wanted to buy a piece of art and this time we knew exactly who we wanted the artist to be. In Oxford, MS, where we both went to school there is a restaurant, Ajax, which happens to be one my favorite places in the whole world. It is what you could probably call a dive restaurant but it feel like home to us. Anyhoo, it is filled with folk-type art, several from a Memphis artist named Lamar Sorrento.
I don't know if it is the strong connection to a place I love, but there is something about his primitive paintings that I can't get enough of. When it came to choosing a piece we knew this was the one....especially when we saw this detail....
Bo Diddley, McComb, MS- Patrick's home town. We loved that this painting was about Mississippi but once we saw Bo we knew it was meant to be. Love it. Changing our whole dining room around it, hence the dark paint swatches. I will let you know how it goes, may take a while...

LOVE the fact that you all chose a painting together that you both love and that it has meaning to you! It is great fun, colorful and full of personality. I am so passionate about homes, and art especially, reflecting who lives in them, and this is such a perfect example. No art chosen to match the sofa - no m'am, you chose a piece you love and that has so much more depth and meaning. My opinion- for what it's worth! Congrats!!

Oh, Marianne, I love it! So personal and original! Growing up in Memphis I think I've seen one or two of his paintings (I want to say I may have seen one in the Rendezvous last time I was home, but could be wrong). Enjoy your new art!

Love Ajax! And also loving I can go any day! Went last week and had turkey and dressing. To die for! Especially with mac and cheese and greens. The painting is a great idea for a gift.

Hi Marianne, I believe my family and I ate at Ajax in July when we visited my sister and her family in Oxford. There was a lot of cool, indie art on the walls and fantastic southern food! I had fried pickles for the first time and it was GREAT!! There was also a hilarious painting of Sanford and Son/Red Foxx which you don't see everyday. Thanks for the post! Jen
