The Nursery: Crib?

Several people have asked me if I have started on the nursery and the answer sadly is....No. I have started telling people at this rate the baby is going to be sleeping in a basket for a while once he gets here. Seriously though, I plan on starting sometime in June, there is just not enough time right now.

Working on so many other nurseries I thought I knew what I would do for a crib. I thought it would be a painted Jenny Lind...

I still really love this look and I am sure I will use it again sometime (above images are not mine, I will try to dig some up). However, I think I want to do something different. I have really liked this Ikea crib for a while now but I am just not sure. Has anyone out there used an Ikea crib? I would love to hear some feed back. I am drawn to the panels and really the color of the wood too which is surprising.

I might look into just a plain one like this one (but not so red). Nothing fancy but I do not want anything large or ornate for this crib.
The budget will not be going towards a crib but if it was these from Restoration Hardware would be top of my list...

So who knows what it will be. As soon as I really get into gear I will let you know what I am thinking!

Love all of them, but the painted cribs are my favorite... Timeless...

The restoration hardware one is beautiful. I almost went the Jenny Lind route too but opted for an iron crib for my 2nd and I love it. Don't feel too bad...he is almost 7 months and I just decided on fabric and paint this week and have a contractor here as we speak installing crown molding and wainscoting....he'll be in a big boy bed before he's got a proper nursery!

Oh, I am a big fan of the painted cribs. It is a great way to display add a splash personality while still retaining a classic look. Good luck with the search, I am sure you will find the perfect one!

Hello, Marianne!

Thanks you for dropping by the other day. I'm feeling better now and with more energy! Thank God for the 2nd trimester! :-)

I have 2 kids and this baby is my 3rd. Unfortunately, we've donated everything last year and we'll have to start buying everything all over again! But it's all right, at least, I have more experience now. Look for a STURDY crib, that's what you really want. Sure, looks are also nice, but look for a well built crib. Kids will use it for around 2 to 3 years, and after you can convert it to a toddler bed. I don't recommend spending money on a toddler bed, but wait until you but a bed they can use for many years to come, like a twin.

We bought our crib at Toys r Us last Sunday because I found the perfect one at a perfect price. Start looking online, go to stores, look for sale. They happen often, but you need to start looking now. Don't let to buy "everything" in one day, because you'll spend much more.

And yes, we can spend a fortune in a nursery, but I'm not for that. I think you can make it beautifully, without breaking the bank! :-)

Have a wonderful day,

xo

We have a Jenny Lind at out cottage in white and I just adore it! Even now that the boys are out of it I still keep it up for overnight guest with small babes since it is so adorable, so that is my pick.

With Ikea I have no experience relating to the cribs. With safety standards & requirements I am sure it would be a great choice...but it will most likley not be a crib that you could save and pass down to others.

Looking forward to seeing what you do!!

Love the classic look of a Jenny Lind crib, but I have to echo the thoughts above about investing in a sturdy crib that can convert later on. It's amazing how quickly a baby outgrows a crib, and again how quickly a toddler outgrows a toddler bed. Can't wait to see what you end up picking.

I wish I had known...I would have sold you a Jenny Lind! I do have a few other pieces if you are interested that coordinate.
And yes, I have one really nice crib and one cheap one from Ikea. I like it a lot. It's obviously not as fancy as my $450 one, but I don't think you really notice the crib itself. If you are going to save money on something, I would definitely just get a cheap one from Ikea. By the time you do bedding, paint, rugs, etc. you don't even really "see" the crib. So, I wish I had saved my money 3 years ago and bought a cheap one for my first child.

One other thought is that my first child totally chewed all over the "nice" crib. Such a waste of money. Glad I got the Ikea one for one of the twins!

All of those you featured are quite lovely. We used a neutral-colored wood grain crib, because we didn't find out the sex of either child, so we didn't want something too masculine of feminine. I'm sure with your design expertise, your baby's nursery will be fabulous!

I recently saw those Restoration cribs too...to die for, but not so much for the wallet.

Can't wait to see the all your nursery ideas!

I too loved the idea of a painted crib but ended up going with an Ikea crib and LOVE it. We went with the Gulliver crib and it's extremely sturdy and beautiful. There are a few picks on my blog http://gracefulwhimsy.blogspot.com/2011/03/nursery-sneak-peek.html

If it makes you feel better... some of my friends have had bad experiences with RH over their cribs. Random: one friend has a really cute crib you may like from JC Penny!!! Seriously, my snobby self whould never have guessed ;)

I had a friend who used an Ikea crib in their Hamptons home. It was used only on the weekends during the summer months. She liked the look. I don't have any personal experience with Ikea cribs, but I understand the wanting a simple crib. I did that for my son's room and I always thought the look was crisp and clean. I will say the painted ones are quite fun though! When are you due?

I am in LOVE with the crib I bought for my baby girl. It is a white iron crib and she has loooooved it. I am not a fan of the convertible cribs, well just the look of them I think. Ikea has the CUTEST toddler beds too-- oh but I ALSO LOOOOOVE the painted jenny Linds as well, have you seen the fun one over at Fly Through my WIndow blog? looooooove. Mine is under nursery on my house tour if you are interested at all in the iron =) Did I mention that I love your blog? I think you and I have very similar taste =) xoxo shelli

I have 3 kids and the IKEA crib is the way to go. They out grow them fast and you don't feel as bad ditching them when they do (or your tastes change). They are also lower profile so you aren't bowled over by crib. You can always paint the IKEA crib if you are truly married to the painted look. Go IKEA!!

How exciting! Here's my two cents about cribs. I had four kids. When we had the first, my hub was still in school. We bought an inexpensive crib. Reasonable quality. It lasted three kids. I say buy the best you can afford. Second, all four of my kids got to the point where they pulled themselves up and gnawed on the crib slats. Because of that, I would never paint a crib...Maybe buying one already painted that was really chew resistant? Their chompers are really sharp! :) Good luck!

I think even the simplest crib can be made to look spectacular with the bedding, it all depends on how creative you get. A friend of mine who is on a major budget (both she and hubby are going through law school) bought a second hand great condition crib, repainted it a pale gray, bought goregous pale pink and white toile bedding and I swear it looks like it is out of a magazine spread and she spent a total of around 345.00 for everything! She was just so creative. Good luck:)

Keep in mind that the little one is only in the crib for a very short amount of time...so just know the one you choose will be in and out - of your life! Then comes the big bed....and diapers to big panties!

I LOVE the second totlast one from RH. We bought a really good crib for my first and we used it with all 3 kiddos so it was very well worth the investment. All of the kids used the crib for 2.5-3 years each:) If you get on you love .....you can use it for all the little ones in the future:)

Love both. I just made this same decision. This was for a second crib and I was stuck between the Jenny Lind and a different IKEA one. I went with IKEA. I wanted something a little more modern but I still love the painted Jenny Lind - so pretty!

QUESTION... when you paint a jenny lind crib, which is what I am planning to do, what type paint do you use to make it safe for the baby?
