Let's Take A Vote...Girl's Wallpaper

Oh the joys compromise...I get asked a lot if I have free rein when it comes to decorating my own house and the answer is no. I do ask for Patrick's input/opinion a lot and trust me, he has one. Now there are definitely times when those go in one ear and out the other. When I know he will love something in the end and just doesn't have the vision for it at the moment I might just go ahead and do it anyway...ahem. Which brings us to the nursery. I found this wallpaper when looking for a client right before we found out we were pregnant (we don't know yet what we are having)...
I LOVED it and filed it away to use in the future...I just didn't know where because it is on the funky side and needs a special home. Then when we found out we were having a baby it popped right into my mind (and is probably the reason I feel like we are having a girl lately)...
HOWEVER, when I showed it to Patrick it went a little something like this:

Me: What do you think about this wallpaper?
P: Hate it, why?
Me: Because....if we have a girl I am thinking about using it in the nursery
P: Ughhhhh, No.
Me: WHYYYYYYYYYYY??????????
P:No.
Me: I need a better reason...
P: I don't like floral wallpapers.
Me: But it isn't really a true floral in the traditional sense...

This is when we both eye each other and silently call a truce. He is thinking that I have access to thousands of wallpapers and will continue the search and is glad not to have to continue the debate of what is a "floral" wallpaper. I am thinking that I will file this away for now and if we find out it is a girl that I will pull it back out and revisit.
In the end though unless he has a change of heart I won't use this, I can tell he really is not a fan and I want him to love our nursery too.
I do understand this is not a universally likable wallpaper. Which makes me wonder what you all think? Love it or not so much? Don't worry about hurting my feelings, even though I love it I can see both sides.

PS- We find out what we having next week!

I love it, it's beautiful!

I think it's lovely and would look beautiful in a nursery with white and grey furniture. You would have to keep everything simple though or it could end up looking too busy with all the other crap/toys that you accumulate when you have babies!
Go for it!
Good luck for next week!

I really like it. It's elegant and sophisticated. I love the colourway also. It's a wonderful neutral colour with a soft design.

If the nursery is to be used later by the same child, it will be timeless. Only if it's a girl of course!

I love, love, love it!!!!!!!! It is very whimsy and perfect for a nursery. I would just do one wall and paint the others.
My other thought was you could use it in some built in bookshelfs on the back part. Perhaps with shelves and things on the shelves it would be just a slight accent that your hubby could handle.
If all else fails, I would line the drawers of a whiye dresser with it. Does that make sense? Then your husband wouldn't have to really look at it.
I love it though!

Funny... I love it in the big photo where you see it in a room but I don't really like the samples. Maybe you should show him the photos? It can be hard to visualize something like wallpaper.

Oh, my! I'm also in LOVE with the wallpaper, Marianne.

Here's an idea... show the comments to your husband. I'm pretty sure all the comments will be positive about this wallpaper, and maybe he'll change his mind... lol
:-)

It would look beautiful in a nursery. Very delicate.

Thank you so much for your super sweet comment. It made my day!!!

I hope you have an amazing week! :-)

Husbands lack vision sometimes. It's too bad you can't do the room your way and then unveil it when it's all done. He's focussing on only one element instead of envisioning the whole room.
I think letting you have the wallpaper is the least he could do for you with what a pregnancy does to you, not to mention the labor.
Maybe it won't be an issue, you could have a boy.

I LOVE it!

Every time I show my husband something I want to do to the house he hates it. And whenever I am really convinced it will look amazing, I do it anyway and he ends up loving it so much he claims it was his idea. maybe that'd happen to you too?

Ha! We have similar debates at our house. It usually involves food, " you can barely taste the,____,peanut butter, wheat, coconut" Truth is the other person ALWAYS CAN! Floral is floral. I love it:)

I LOVE it...it is also pretty versatile so you can keep it for a few years as the nursery changes into a big girl room. :)

I love it! After 9 months of carrying the baby, u should at least get to select the wallpaper!

Do men every like wallpaper? I know mine does not! My friend chose an amazing paper for her bathroom, and her husband announced "people will think you take drugs when they see this." I think that paper is so delicate and modern and amazing!

If the baby turns out to be a boy... maybe paint is the way to go. You are hearing this from a woman who has two boys-- I did not understand the word "destruction" before they came along...

I like it a lot, except that from a distance the flowers kind of look like jellyfish to me. Up close I think it's gorgeous! :) And I'm not even a huge fan of florals ... but this one is so pretty.

Karen said...

I love it and I'm not even an enormous fan of florals. I think what I like about it is that the floral pattern isn't in multiple colors, it's subtle. If you have a girl would you consider a compromise, maybe buying a single roll and framing a piece, covering storage boxes with it, etc...? Your desire to make sure your husband loves the nursery too is really sweet.

You must be really excited to find out the sex of the baby. Can't wait to hear the result.

I absolutely love it. I don't think it's an "in-your-face" kind of floral... if you find out you're having a girl I say 100% to revisit it with the hubs! :)

It's hard when you come across those things they don't agree with though. Thankfully the nursery has been easy for us... but names were a huge point of contension. Thankfully, the one we had the biggest issue with was a boys name I loved and he hated.... but we're having a girl so that made it a lot easier! ;)

Can't wait to find out what you're having. You must be so anxious!

I love this wallpaper! The color is perfect for a nursery, girl or boy. You can use pops of any other color. My nurseries were white and I added blue and yellow for my son and turquoise for my daughter. It was beautiful.
Hope that you are feeling well and enjoying your trip.

It is beautiful but you have to ask yourself are you going to tire of it? Is it going to be fun taking it down because she doesnt like it when she is 9. lol I love the colors of the wallpaper and I am sure no matter what you choose its going to be a breath taking room:)

would be soooo pretty with a pale shell pink!

I love it! I love both the large scale floral print and the colorway. I think it could look terrific in a girl's room.

Hubs and I used to have conversations like that, but they would end with him going away on business and me doing it anyway. He'd come back and say, "The room looks great! I told you that other paint/fabric/whatever wouldn't look good." To which I'd reply that this was the objectionable item. Repeat the scenario a half a dozen times, and now he just says, "You know I can't visualize these things, do whatever you think is best."

I get the inside of the house, he gets the outside. Clear divisions work for us. Hope he likes it better the next time you pull it out.

Argh....husbands!!!

I LOVE it. Do you think that maybe he just can't 'see' it and maybe needs to trust you a little? I have had the same kinds of conversations with my husband. (You're going to use 'that' color? etc.) but when it is done he always likes it. He just can't see the vision.
My 'advice' - I wouldn't show him samples. I'd show him finished rooms and see what he likes and dislikes that way. I think that is a better indication. You know, the same with clients. They don't always have the ability to see a swatch and 'get' it. That is why trust is so important when designing for someone else.

it's STUNNING. it's the kind of paper that could last in the room for ages. even when she's little, you could punch it up with pinks and purples to make it kid friendly

I'm going to be grateful for a moment that my husband has zero opinion (even though it constantly drives me crazy). Ahhh.

I really like this wallpaper. Not knowing which direction your husband's taste veers, maybe he'd prefer something a smidge funkier? I'm CRAZY about the wallpaper Emily Henderson used on the Secrets From a Stylist episode here: http://www.stylebyemilyhenderson.com/blog/episode-4-more-breakdowns.html

And if he's earthy, the flowers could pass as artichokes? :-)

Okay the wall paper is beautiful. I actually liked it a lot in the swatch photo - makes me think that it would look gorgeous framed or at a back of a book case or cubby or closet for hte nursery

Selfishly hoping for a girl playmate :) and let's face it the hubby really does not get much say-so in the nursery. Its like our 2nd wedding dress! Oh and i love the wallpaper :)

Oh my goodness Marianne..congratulations, so happy for you both!
I love the wallpaper...it would be lovely in a little girls nursery, it's so full of whimsy without being overtly "flowery". It's almost a neutral and would compliment anything you wanted to furnish the room with. ♥
Maybe...down the road, you could show it to your hubby again and just maybe he won't even remember that he didn't like it the first time around...that's been known to happen at my house...just sayin!!

You might not love my answer because it's more about marriage than wallpaper, but here goes (in love!): when a woman asks her husband's advice, he feels most respected when his response is considered. It doesn't mean he's always right, but my husband has clued me in that it doesn't feel good to be asked then ignored (and then to ask all my girlfriends). I know you love your husband and want him to feel respected...me, too! Just didn't realize how seeking his opinion and then seeking a million others after his made him feel. Hope this comes across with the right tone of encouragement and humility! :)

I love it for a girl's nursery, because it could grow with her. It's a subtle color with a beautiful print that can go with so many other colors! Keep working on it, Marianne! :)

love it!! It would be so pretty in a girls room (I'd put it in either one of my girls rooms)

One compromise could be to use it as a beautiful piece of artwork!Mount it and frame it in a really pretty frame and then hang it on the wall in your nursery! That way if you get tired of it or have a boy someday, you can just switch it out!

I like the subtle coloration. I am not a big floral gal either, sorry. I think once you find out what you are having you will open up to all kinds of possibilities. You will never do your first nursery again and it such a fun process, enjoy every minute. Congrats, Kathysue

I really like it! I've not yet found the nerve to put it up in my own house, but I'm really liking wallpaper as of late. I think I'm just now getting over the painstaking project of removing the 80's navy/country blue/mauve stiped/floral combo that was in every room of our house when we moved in 12 years ago! Can't wait to see what you do with your nursery!
