For Those In Design

Whew! Back from Market in Atlanta last week and ready to hit the ground running. If only this 10,000 sq. ft. warehouse belonging to Kelly Wearstler belonged to me....Then maybe I wouldn't be waiting FOREVER for items to arrive that have been on backorder a long time. Speaking of, I was told over and over at Market that there are a lot of problems with shipping in China and the problem seems to be pretty much across the board. Anyone else having as many problems as I am?

Hmmm, maybe that is not the best post to start the week...I will be back with something pretty later.

Oh I am excited to start seeing the market updates. I've been getting them from vendors but always like to see the opinions of designers!

Looks like you had a good market visit! I've had some things on order that have taken what seems like years lately!! Have a great week!

Lately everything I want to order or have order is on backorder for at least 12 weeks. It's horrible! I feel your pain.

Can't wait to see what you found at market!

I have had issues with a few brands. It seems that even if you order from some companies right away they are still on back order and never seem to get here when needed.

I worked at the Dallas Market (World Trade Center) for five years. When the economy took a downturn, it really took a downturn. It was almost an overnight situation in my experience. The clients were not eager to make decisions, designers couldn't buy because of this, showrooms couldn't pay bills, manufacturers couldn't order products, etc. It was a very quick spiral. Over the past few months, things are getting back on track. Unfortunately, it will not be as quickly as it went off track. It's so unfortunate that I've seen several long time showrooms close due to the economy. I get tired of hearing about the negative economy, but it's really the truth. Mid-high end furniture is a luxury. Most consumers are not spending their funds to redecorate. They are living with what they have for now. I do love the furniture industry and it is getting better. I hope that the lead times do get better for everyone. It is much easier to make clients happy when they can realistically expect their items in 6-8 weeks versus 12 + weeks.

Here I was thinking that a designers job was nothing but glamorous ;) Sorry about the headache with the backorders. No fun! Hope everything straightens out soon.

A friend and I want to go to the Atlanta market someday. Truth be told, I wish so many of the hot reproduction items didn't have to come from China. USA would be nice!

Happy Monday!

I haven't had any China orders recently, but I did recently learn that the entire country of Italy takes some sort of month long vacation and if I didn't order the piece of furniture I wanted that week, I wouldn't see it until November. Crazy

So jealous of your time at market! If I found myself in that room, I'd have to pinch myself to make sure I hadn't died and gone to heaven!

Unfortunately, the economic climate dictates delivery on many levels. Accessories, Furnishings and even textiles are Sloooowly trickeling in when ordered. The problem lies in that manufacturers are being very conservative and not producing as many goods...thus the back orders and wait times. It's frusterating!

I'm waiting up to 3 months for fabrics that used to be in stock from major wholesalers. And, lighting is the same.

On a brighter note, hope you had a great market...I love Atlanta :)

I'm head of purchasing for a jewelry design house and our factories in China and India have been behind as well.

According to them, they under bought materials when orders slowed and now that they are picking up, they are behind!

So I hope this is all a good thing and it means that things are picking back up for everyone!

Thanks, as always, for the beautiful posts!
