Dorm Room Design Day

When a reader, Tenia, e-mailed me asking if I would participate in "Dorm Room Design Day" I gladly said "yes"! However life has been c-c-c-razy (I know I say that a lot but it seems to never change) and I ran out of time to do an inspiration board. So...not wanting to be a complete party pooper I did pull together some inspiration for all those heading for dorm life. Starting with color...if you can paint your dorm room I say go for a bold color choice. You are young, free and in temporary housing, go BIG while it is fun.... Instead of boring bookshelves think outside the box for storage. A funky piece or painted piece like the one below would look great....
You will need a chair and I definitely say go for pattern....
Speaking of seating these poufs are cute and perfect for extra seating when friends are around...oh and let's not forget a fun rug....
I wish statement making headboards were around when I was in college. Tall and tufted makes me smile every time...
Dorms can feel so sterile...adding a little feminity never hurt....oh and lucite works great in a small space...
Don' t be distressed by a cramped room, good things come in small packages...
A gallery wall of favorite things can make home feel a little closer...
Or go for some large art, it doesn't have to be fancy to have style....

Thank you Tenia for asking me to be a part of Dorm Room Design Day. All the images here are from Domino. For more inspiration be sure to stop by these blogs all participating in DRDD...

ah ha! Now it makes sense, dorm design day, wondered why I was suddenly seeing so many posts on dorm rooms. They have certainly come a long way since I attended college, an entire industry seems to emerged around decorating and outfitting dorm rooms. Great images...Janell

If only my dorm room could have looked something like this! Unfortunately, it was a match box with a view. :) Great ideas!

Great suggestions, Marianne, and inspiring images. Wasn't it fun to put yourself in a student's shoes for a bit?

Fabulous job Marianne. My daughter sent me a text yesterday to say she got a corner dorm room so she will now have a bit more space. All such great ideas. Wish they could paint, & the bed is built in. But, where there is inspiration there is a way!! xx

I don't think my daughter saw the floor of her dorm room until spring when she packed to go. lol The poufs are an outstanding idea for a dorm room. They are portable, multifunctional and can add some color and flair. It is amazing how much a little effort on decor can brighten up those dingy dorm rooms.

Are you serious? Have you ever seen an actual dorm room? Not only are there rules like not painting the walls, most universities have strict policies against bringing in additional furniture. Most importantly, dorm rooms in general are teeny tiny. These tips of yours are more appropriate for a first apartment, especially the studio variety.

Hello,

I shopped at http://www.dormco.com/?Click=18851 for my dorm essentials. I bought my bedding needs, my refridgerator/freezer (an absolute must....TRUST me when I say you will need the freezer), and all of my bathroom essentials. It was fantastic since it all shipped to my house for $2.95. The first night of school my roommate and I shopped online together for the decorations, rugs, seating and furniture. Again we paid the same shipping and it was sent directly to our dorm. What a fantastic service, and one that this college senior will use to furnish her apartment after graduation : )
