Choosing Sides

A few weeks ago I was home visiting my parents when I spied this cart. It had been sitting in the basement, left from the previous owners, and somehow I had missed it until now.
So it came home with me and now resides as our new side table in the den.
I had the top cut out of left over marble and asked them to keep the bottom unfinished. I love the clean feel of the marble against the worn down wood but I wanted part of the marble to be imperfect as well.
I wish I knew the story behind it. We are thinking it might be a coal cart with the unique wheels but I would love to hear any guesses.
While the old side table was a hand me down that I did nothing for me, I loved what was underneath it. I had this vintage suitcase underneath with books stacked on top....now I will have to find it a new home.

What a fun piece. It's always interesting when a home has a piece that is unique and one-of-a-kind.

This is such a great piece! It adds such character! And that vintage suitcase is beautiful. I know the wheely ones are practical, but they certainly don't have that kind of style.

What an incredible little table - love that it has a past! You're right, the cool marble against the worn wood is a fantastic combo.

Okay, I am quite curious as to what the cart's history is all about! Hmmmm. I like the juxaposition of the worn with the refined.

I'm sure whoever left it behind never imagined the industrial look would be "in!" What a fun find for you!

Marianne, what finds!

I love that you picked a white, fresh marble top. The contrasts are great.

And that suitcase!!! I see it being a center piece on a rustic table with books and a candle holder on it. Love the color!

Thank you for your oh-so-sweet comment about my blue chest. You have no idea how much that meant. Thank you! You are a dear!

What a perfect marriage between sleek and rough! Fantastic!
The suitcase could work in so many ways. Underneath a gorgeous hallway table or perhaps as a quirky addition to a library or home office. The colour is insane and makes me think of Hermes. A keeper for sure.

I love the say you finished it with a marble top and the vignette looks fabulous. I know what you mean about wishing you knew the story behind it; that can be the best part of "pre-loved" items.

I love things that have a rusticity and soul. It looks like it might have housed some sort of cable or rope?
Love to know what it is or was used for?
Great top!

I love shabby chic furniture. But do you think it goes well with rest of the furniture in the room.
