Pillow Talk

When I saw this in House Beautiful I immediately ripped it out. I am in a constant state of flux in regards to the pillows on my bed. Flat, traditional, messy, stacked, how many- 2,3,4,5? So many decisions. These images from Real Simple make great cases for several setups...
Careless and pretty or streamlined and classic?
"I just woke up"
or perfectly placed?

Flat?
Fluffy?
Here is a picture of my bed, although it is always changing. The blue pillow is long gone and right now it is pretty simple. I would love to make some fabulous shams out of gorgeous fabric but I have yet to decide on anything.
I will probably do something peaceful and feminine (assuming the Hubby gives approval), but sometimes I get the urge to something a little funky and unexpected. Something like this....

BTW- These shams are $4.99 right now, that is $4.99 for the pair! Very cute, I wish I had a use for them.
How do you stage the pillows on your bed?

I am currently using regular white shams, then white euro shams, + one down throw pillow in a print. Very simple & clean. Is working for now! Why is bed pillow design so tough???

funny you should post this as I am currently working with a client and we are having the same dilemma. She has two European Pillows from the previous decorator in one fabric and another in a co-ordinating fabric as well as 4 sleeping pillows. Do we put the square ones in front or behind? And then do we add or take away? Great photos to give me some inspiration, thanks.

I struggle with this too.. Right now I have two pillows with shams that match my comforter & two in front of them in a solid ivory that match our sheets.. and I'm on the hunt for throw pillows. Those photos are great inspiration though, thank you!

I have to laugh at this post - my hubster is always giving me a hard time about all the "unused" pillows on our bed! I'm generally a fluff-them-up-face-forwards kind of gal, but I always love it when I see pics of beds with pillows stacked flat - maybe one day I'll try it...

This is funny, because I am always looking at how people "make" their beds! I have 12 pillows on my bed...12! They are all neatly placed. All of my bedding is white, and I can stack, etc. pillows. I wouldn't change the white for the world! I do have a few accent pillows though...a pop of color. I really wanted the whole bedding set (Restoration Hardware), but thought it was too pricy, so I just did the accent pillows with my white linens!

I love your bed(room)! Lovely! And $4.99 for shams? I wish I had a place for these beauties1

i struggle with this too...currently we have all-white bedding and I have a very traditional set-up.

After seeing Julie & Julia last night, I am loving the "careless and pretty" bedroom pillow look, with the different color pillows arranged semi-haphazardly. But that would involve non-white bedding, methinks?

What a fun post! We have a lot of pillows on our bed as hubby sleeps with 4 and me with 2 and then the 2 shams. I go with a straight/streamlined look.

Love how you have decorated your own room. I realize this post is about pillows, but I'm quite taken with the wall color and chandelier was well. Great ideas for my own abode!

Your bedroom is beautiful! I was up sewing a new pillow to go with my new bedding late last night. I vow to keep the pillows to 6 max as they make the hubby crazy.

I'm the classic neat freak - flat! My parents have a lovely bedroom but takes them 10 min.'s just to take the pillows of their bed.
Your own bedroom is beautiful. I have to say I love a pop of the unexpected as well. Mixes life up!

This post cracked me up! We always end up with something like 3 pillows on the floor in the morning! But, still, I like a nice pile of pillows for reading in bed :-) I love the chandelier in your bedroom! Awesomeness abounds!

Hilarious...I ripped out the same picture! Love the chandalier in your room. It's perfect!

I'm a straight/streamline girl. As if you couldn't have guessed that! :)

For some reason--- I do not like the way it looks when they are flat!

Pillows are a hot topic in our house- my husband is always wondering what we need them for if "we dont use them". But I adore the look of a bed piled with them! I'm going to have to play around with some of the looks you have in this post!

Love perfectly placed and never flat! Need at least 5 at a time and would love a big tufted headboard. Your bedroom is beautiful!

Your bedroom looks awesome!! Love the bed and the mirrors..

i like flat (two pillows stacked on top of each other on each side of the bed). and the total number of pillows is determined by my husband's threshold for "pretty" but not necessarily useful things!

hmm, does the floor count? As bad as it is, I cant remember the last time I made my bed was, seriously I cant.

I think it was when I took pics for my blog :)

...hangs my head in shame now

b and i are in need of new pillows (this post reminds me). unfortunately, we've been camped out on our couch for some time so there really hasn't been any "placement" so to speak! i'd say my pillow style is a bit haphazard at best.

I have the same problem, my bed is constantly changing. I love your room so far, I can't wait to see what you decide to do next. Funky is always fun!

i change all the time too!! sometimes i'm in the mood for euros & standard pillows & a decorative pillow, but other times (when life is really crazy/ busy, like right now) I lay the two standard pillows down flat (IF the bed even gets made.)

love all these ideas.

I go back and forth...usually the pillows at a slight angle but not quite up all the way. These are some great examples. I struggle with wanting to have patterns on the pillowcases and coordinating with curtains (and NOT matchy matchy).

Right now mine are pretty 'classic', but I really want the 'fluffy' and 'just woke up' look. I need more pillows!

I arrange them pretty symmetrically - it makes the bed feel like neat & finished.
