Too Little?

I am currently debating if the rug I want for our dining room (that would be want not need, I should keep repeating that to myself) will be too narrow for the space. This picture makes me rethink things though.....

PS- A HUGE THANK YOU TO MEG AT FROM PINK TO GREEN for the One Lovely Blog Award!!!!!!!!!!! I very much appreciate it!!!!!!!!! I would like to pass it on to all the blogs on my list and H&H readers as they make my day better every time I get to read them!

I think that you definitely NEED a rug and you NEED to go and do research on the subject, !!!! On your post yesterday, I love leather....jackets , boots , skirts , but I have decided that , now I'm old , boo hoo , I am drawing a line at leather trousers !!!!

i think the room in the picture is a narrow room and that's why the narrow rug works. it mimics the lines of the room. that said, it's still an unconventional shape for a dining room, in fact i think it's meant to be just a library? so if your room is not your typical square room and has a kooky shape then i think you could get away with it. otherwise buy 2 and tape them together with carpet tape.

Hmm.. that rug actually works in the space.. but it's also a fairly narrow room as well. Congrats on the award.

Oh, and I just ordered Thom's book you mentioned in your guest post- THANK YOU for introducing us! ;)

I fully support the skinny rug, I think it would be great in your dining room!
BTW: Don't hate me but did you see the updated Anthro website!? Me likey!! :)
Also! Thanks for the loaner extension! haha.

Oh, in my OCD world, everything is about proportions. The question is...could you live with the rug? This picture works because there is so much in the room, it distracts from the rug!

As always...great posting. You are one of my "every morning reads". We should make that a blog award!?

Meh, too narrow for me. I hate chair legs half on/half off...

I love the room you have pictured, narrow rug included ( and those wonderful chairs!). What are the dimensions of your dining room and are you already in love with a specific rug that might be too narrow?

I think pne of the factors that make this rug work is the awesome dark floors. So, that being said, I think there are certain factors that would make it work. I think if it's the right flooring, and also if it is atleast long enough so the chairs on the ends of the table will atleast be all the way on it could work... and yes, this is a narrow room.. However, in a normal square room I still think it could work.. so long as the decor in the room is cool and matches the feel of it.. It would be different.. and sometimes when we take risks with design, that is when the best things happen! Also, I sense that you are really feeling like this is a good idea and it would just be wrong not to try it.. I always say "trust yourself" with design.. if you have that feeling.. GO WITH IT! I mean what if the first person that thought of doing an all white room didn't do so because it's not traditionally done? ;) I think your on to something.. Let me know what happens!

Another thought on a narrow dining room rug (yes, I am obsessing a little bit this am). I hate rugs that chairs do not sit comfortably on. Take into consideration if the dinning room chairs can be scooted back and forth without catching the rug. Also consider that when sitting in the chair, all fours rest comfortably without wobbling due to uneven surfaces. Ok...I am done commenting for the day. Off to take my meds ;)

Thanks for the email...come visit anytime!!

I love the rug- and those chairs!!!
But it's true- chairs that you move around alot can be annoying half-on/half-off... I'd keep looking and if you can't find anything you like as much come back to the narrow. This is coming from your twinkie.
Also- this picture makes me want to paint something black!

I like the long narrow rug, but I agree that the half on, half off can be annoying (I had that setup for a while). Still, a gorgeous rug! Congrats on your one lovely blog award, you definitely give me daily inspiration :-)

Oh I love this rug! I agree with what others said if you have a narrow room I think it will work perfectly.

What does your dining room table look like? Pictures please! Or else I'm just going to have book a trip to AL to come see it myself. :)

Congrats on the award!

Oh, I like the wide width of the rug in the photo - it really fills out the space.

I say go for the rug but I will put oriental rugs even over a room that already has wall to wall carpet--they are great collectors items and you will always use it...like if you have a larger room one day you will just have to get another rug to fill the space. Huzzah for oriental rugs

You might have to get the run in the room to see if it works or not. I love that inspiration pic thought, beautiful room!

I think it's a little narrow for me. I'm with Doug- not liking part of the chair legs on and part off! But I do like the rug!
