A Happier Home For My China

Maybe it is the weather, maybe it is the fact that my bank tells me I should not be doing "personal home projects" right now, but I am itching to do something. I need to keep it small though. Y'all already know I want to paint our front door, but since the weather is too cold, I am looking for other things to paint. Then I saw this picture in Domino this morning....
Be still my heart. I am in a definite stripe AND blue phase right now, I knew what I should do. I need to change the back of my china cabinet (from my Grandmother). It is currently a funky yellow and gray wallpaper, which I do like a lot, but I want a change. So I was thinking about painting it (Mom we will discuss this later, I know I just made you panic).
Let me just pause here to say that this project and the Domino picture above make me think of my friend Brooke. The image below is one of our favorites and another inspiration for this project.
So do I paint it? Do I use another wallpaper (which is just tacked up at the moment)?
I need suggestions. I am leaning towards stripes which would be cheaper to paint than wallpaper, but can this be done neatly without chipping one of the colors? (by me) Help!

Unless your china cabinet is a really old antique, I say paint it! I love the stripes, and I think it would be so pretty with your china in front of them. If your mom says no to the paint how about just the stripes on the back, and maybe some new modern hardware?

I cant wait to see what you do with it!

will you be painting over the current paper? It can be done, you just have to have a good base then take the painters tape off before the paint dries too much, and make sure you use a better painters tape

i love the idea of stripes! if you change your mind a lot then i would use paper. if not, then go for it. FYI, if you scour where the tape is then there is less chance of bleeding.

What about painting the stripes on your old wallpaper, or on some poster board that's cut to fit? Then you don't have to paint the wood, saving your mother the panic attack? :)

I say wallpaper, it may be more expensive, but no one would panic, and you would not do anything to the value of the piece.

Oh so exciting!! Love the stripes! I like everyone's ideas about painting over the paper because then it's maybe not so permanent and your mom will be happier! can't wait to see it!

I agree about painting over paper or using paper.... not as permanent... and I know how you like to change things around!

I agree, paint it unless it is a antique. But i love painting things. paint is amazing.

Don't paint on the wood--that is possibly a family heirloom that once painted will always be painted. If you do paint, check to see how it will work with your current china b/c you wouldn't want your china to clash with the paint. That striped picture was great esp due to that china that went with it...or you can always buy more china to match the paint

I agree with Jenny just cut to fit some posterboard and stripe it up. Easy and when you're sick of it you can change it.

I love that cottage living picture with the blue paint. I am no help in telling you what you should do as I have built in cabinets in my dining room I have dealt with for years trying to decide what to do with ;( good luck!
